If you’re a veteran winter sports bettor – or even if you’re a novice in the field – it’s always useful to know what the next big winter sports event is, given that this is a fairly obscure kind of sports specialty. So here are three upcoming winter sports fests in which you can indulge, as an audience member – even if you’re watching in a sports bar on the other side of the planet – a bettor and a fan, all at the same time!
The Winter X Games in Aspen Colorado
Now in its 20th year, the Winter X Games is an annual event, featuring skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. Winter X Games, which takes place in 2017 between January 26 and 29, runs in conjunction with a music arts festival at the same time, and both the sporting events and festival center will take place on Colorado’s Buttermilk Mountain.
The Winter World University Games in Almaty Kazhakhstan
The international university sports federation has been hosting this winter celebration of university games officially for 28 years. Also known as Universiade, this is a special exposé of extreme sports in the snow and on ice, for sportsmen and sportswomen aged between 17 and 28, who are full-time students anywhere in the world. This year’s games take place between January 28 and February 8, with freestyling earmarked as the event of the games.
The World Alpine Ski Championships in Piz Nair, St Moritz, Switzerland
Alpine skiing has got to be up there in terms of iconic Swiss values, along with cuckoo clocks and Heidi, the fictional little Swiss girl penned by Johanna Spyri in 1925. These ski championships have been an annual event since 1931, but in the last few years, it has been held every two years, due to insufficient snowfall in some of the cities appointed to host the championships. In 2017, the championships take place between February 6 and 19.
